Camp Philosophy: Our Performing Arts Summer Camp is designed to promote children's creativity, self-expression, and self-esteem in an exciting and non-competitive environment, through the study of the performing arts. Campers will enjoy their daily exploration, and will use their new-found skills to gain an understanding of themselves and the world around them. At the end of each session, campers will have an opportunity to present their art to their family and friends, in a public presentation.

Our camp is appropriate for children who are new to the performing arts, as well as those with experience or those returning for multiple sessions. Novices and seasoned performers alike will gain important life and performing arts skills which will broaden their view of the world and help them communicate effectively in any setting. Our goal is to continue developing of our performing arts camp offerings from year to year, so that children in our region can enjoy the opportunity to enhance their performing arts skills year after year as they grow.

Camper Assessments: Before camp commences, the instructor will offer campers the opportunity to take advantage of an assessment to aid in placement and assist the instructor in selecting dramatic and musical material for use during the camp session that is appropriate to the camper’s individual level.

Camp Staff: Our camp staff is comprised of paid professionals who have made careers of the performing arts. They bring both their personal performing experiences and their teaching backgrounds to bear in creating a productive learning environment and developing student/teacher relationships. In addition, there are performing arts interns (high school, college students, or teacher’s aides) who assist the instructors throughout the camp day.

Curriculum for Campers entering Grades 1 through 4:
A professional instructor will help the children develop performing and artistic skills through the use of drama exercises and games in improvisation, theater movement, and vocal expression. The children will also be encouraged to create poems, plays, songs, hand-made instruments, as well as to keep a camp journal in pictures or writing. The goal of the curriculum is to encourage:
  • Creativity through improvisation, writing, developing stories, and making instruments;
  • Self-discovery through exercises that ask each camper to observe themselves and share their discoveries with each other;
  • Self-expression through exploring varying modalities of communication such as making sounds, body movement, writing, and using instruments;
  • Understanding others through games which require the observation of, and attention to, a partner;
  • An appreciation of the world around us through exploration of the drama and music of neighboring cultures;
  • Self-confidence through appreciation of the uniqueness and value of each individual.

The target grade levels are those entering Grades 1 through 4 (approximately age 6 through 9 years old). Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the instructors and the Camp Director. If a minimum number of students are not attained during registration, we will seek to consolidate the camps in order to maintain program integrity.

The camp day will include at least one 15-minute break for snacks and relaxation in each session, morning and afternoon. Campers enrolled in full day camp will also have time allotted for lunch. Campers and staff provide their own snacks and lunch (if applicable) each day. Campers will also need to provide miscellaneous supplies such as notepads, pens and pencils as needed.

Curriculum for Campers entering Grades 5 through 11: Professional instructors will guide the children through an in-depth exploration of the fundamentals in their elective (drama, dance, or vocal music) for approximately half the day.  For the remainder of the day we will integrate the three electives through the rehearsal process into an ensemble performance piece which will be presented on the last day of each two-week camp session.  Instruction will be tailored to accommodate students who are new to the discipline and those with prior experience.  As a whole, the goal of the curriculum is to enhance the following skill sets:
Group Instruction:

  • Basic stage presence and stage terminology;
  • Teamwork (the communication skills necessary to create collaborative art);
  • Improvisational skills (including the ability to demonstrate vulnerability and comfort with the unknown);
  • Focus skills (listening, relaxation, and observation);

Drama Elective:

  • Appreciation for dramatic literature through scene and character analysis (understanding conflict and resolution);
  • Scene and/or monologue study (commitment to character choices, authenticity, intention, understanding relationships between characters, and pacing);

Vocal Elective:

  • Developing healthy vocal habits and good musicianship;
  • Appropriate solo and ensemble vocal repertoire with performance technique (diction, interpretation, and stage presence);

Dance Elective:

  • fundamental dance appreciation (movement, posture, balance, isolations)
  • focused performance technique in ballet, jazz and modern dance styles

Camp hours are 9am – 4pm weekdays. Depending on enrollment, campers will be grouped by age ranges. If a minimum number of students are not attained during registration, we may consolidate groups to maintain program integrity.

The camp day will include one or two 15-minute breaks for snacks and relaxation, and a 30-minute lunch. Campers and staff provide their own bag lunch and snacks each day.  Refrigeration is available for food storage.  Campers also will need to provide miscellaneous supplies such as notepads, pens and pencils as needed.

Songs for a New World (musical)
September 16-19 , 2010

Music Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown
Presented by arrangement with
Music Theatre International

This unique musical is the brainchild of Tony-Award winning lyricist and composer, Jason Robert Brown, hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical” (The New York Times). It’s all about the music, as each song transports us through different stories, humorous and moving -  of our community and isolation, our desire for the immaterial in a material world, and the moments of decision that define our journey. It reflects a broad range of musical styles and genres including pop, gospel, jazz, and classical music. The Chicago Tribune calls this work “extraordinary, jubilant theater."
