Play by Lorraine Hansberry
Presented by arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Rated PG due to themes of prejudice and family tension

The winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, A RAISIN IN THE SUN is the first play written by an African-American woman ever to be produced on Broadway. The play is filled with inspiration and hope, and shows the struggles of an African American family in Chicago’s South Side in the 1950s. Mother (and grandmother) Lena Younger, her daughter Beneatha, and her son Walter (with his wife Ruth and their son Travis) squeeze into a run-down two-bedroom apartment. But the Youngers have a chance at a new beginning. Ten thousand dollars is coming in the mail, and Lena must decide what to do with it. Beneatha hopes for tuition money, Walter hopes for the down payment on his liquor store, and Ruth just wants her family to be happy. These dreams and others are at the core of the play. It's Hansberry's exploration of how each family member meets these dreams, with dignity or otherwise, that imbues the story with touching honesty and a winning pathos “Though perhaps the prototypical black family drama, Hansberry’s almost perfect blend of comedy and tragedy, combined with the story’s universality, makes the play still seem relevant and readily accessible.” – Talkin ’Broadway.
